Pictures of aunt Lillian Herman mayor of Hannibal

Image
From the memory of my aunt Lynn (bottom row in yellow shirt) I think this picture was taken during Tom Sawyer Days. If I recall, there was a checker game between the mayor of Hannibal (Aunt Lil) and maybe the president of the Chamber of Commerce. I am not sure if that was Aunt Lil's opponent or maybe some county official. Anyway, I think the man standing next to Aunt Lil is a friend of hers that coached her on how to win the checker game. I do not know the younger person standing to the left of the older gentleman. The woman in the back between Aunt Lil and the man (with dark hair, not wearing a hat) is Marge Deline. When Aunt Lil ran for mayor, she resigned as City Clerk of Hannibal. Marge Deline was chosen as the new City Clerk. The tall woman to Aunt Lil's right wearing the straw hat is June Morgan. June was the City Collector for many years. I think Aunt Lil may have originally hired June to work in the City Clerk's office and then June eventually moved to ...

She was appointed city clerk in December 1959 when Curd Fisher retired and held that position until being elected mayor in the spring of 1977. Mrs. Herman served as mayor for 2 terms, from May 1977 until April 1981.  She was also past treasurer of Hannibal Public Library Board, serving from 1981 to 1985.  She was a member of the Holy Family Church. She is buried in Holy Family Cemetery.  From Harold Denkler's letter of 1-24-1992, "She was defeated as mayor by a relative of my sister-in-law, Mrs. Vince Canning."

Aunt Lillian I remember you

Aunt Lillian I remember you I remember her little black dog named Bonnie and she died next to the carport door. She laid down and was facing the living room and as soon as she laid down, blood just started flooding out of her mouth. I remember doing the Tricycle races at Tom Sawyer days and me being on a normal red tricycle like most other kids, but there was a kid on a larger green tricycle that I was so jealous of. I remember dropping my new Care Bear in the dog food bowl right after aunt Lil put canned food in it to feed the dogs and I got the food on my Care Bear and had a total meltdown. I remember my dog, Edward, jumped up and grabbed my cheeseburger from my hands that I had just opened from my Happy Meal and I had a meltdown. Aunt Lil said she would just make me a hamburger and I told her no, I wanted a Happy Meal cheeseburger. I don't remember if we went back and got one or if I just dealt with it, but I felt bad after words. Lillian loved Drummer Boy ...
